US Capitol Visitors Center- North and South Orientation Theaters and Congressional Auditorium
This newest addition to "The Hill" is designed to be the gateway to the US Capitol building for the more than 3 million visitors it receives each year. The facility includes exhibits, food service, two orientation theaters, an auditorium, gift shops, security, a service tunnel for truck loading and deliveries, mechanical facilities, storage, and additional space for the House and Senate. The entire three-level 580,000 sq ft. complex resides entirely underground on the East Capitol Grounds, in order to preserve the views of the building. The two orientation theatres accommodate 1,500 visitors per hour or approximately 12,000 visitors a day. Both theaters will show an orientation film which will educate people about the work and history of the Congress and the Capitol. The 450 seat Congressional Auditorium, which has been wired for electronic voting, can be utilized by members of Congress if either of their chambers is unavailable.
